Quitting smoking is the hardest thing I've ever done. Why? The cigarette creates the tension. The next one releases it. The trap is elegant.
Storytelling works the same way. So does songwriting. So does film. You create tension. You release it. You create it again. The whole game is knowing when.
I was at a drum and bass show in Brooklyn a few weeks ago. Rooftop venue, glass walls, Manhattan skyline. The last opener — a guy named Dieselboy I'd never heard of — walks up and just starts working. Twenty minutes in, it hits me. Goosebumps. Tears. Adrenaline. Sober. I turn to my friend Ilya: "If he can't get us back there again, he should've dropped the mic and walked off."
He got us back. Then a third time. Each peak came faster than the last.
It's not just that you need peaks. It's that the space between them has to shrink.
A story that hits you at the same interval every time isn't building, it's treading water.
The next night I was at a dinner party talking to a journalist from Reuters. He mentioned that most readers bounce around 500 words. Something clicked.
I design for a living. Turns out the same ratios that make a chord feel resolved or restless also govern how big a headline should be relative to body text. Borrowed from music without most designers knowing it.
I'm borrowing it back.
- Your first peak lands before readers leave.
- The next one comes sooner than that.
- The one after, sooner still. Each interval shorter than the last.
The feeling is the point.
Music theory didn't teach composers how to move people. It described what the good ones were already doing by ear. This is the same thing.
Every piece of writing you couldn't put down, every reel you sent your brother, every song you played on repeat, every DJ set that gave you goosebumps on a glass-walled rooftop — they were all following this.
Nobody named it. I'm calling it The Earned Attention Rule.
When my uncle was writing his book, I told him: at the end of every chapter, give me something that makes me need to keep going. He won a blind manuscript competition.
It works because it's always worked. We just never wrote it down.
